Grade 3 Numeracy Intervention in SD62 (Sooke)

Working together on targeted interventions: Using numeracy strategies to address gaps and misconceptions in students’ numbers sense 

  • Targeted intervention for students struggling with number sense
  • Collaborative model of support: Classroom and support teachers working together
  • Improving student learning through embedded professional learning for educators

Phase 1

– Developed and initiated by Jeannie DeBoice in 2011
– Based on First Steps in Mathematics
   & the Reading Recovery model of intervention
– Centralized support from Jeannie DeBoice
   & Deanna Brajcich for the past 3 years (2011-2014)
– 12 school teams participated last year (2013-2014)

Phase 2

In the 2014-2015 school year, we will continue as a Community of Practice, improving our professional practice together with a focus on helping our students develop number sense. Participants new to Grade 3 Numeracy Intervention can access training in First Steps (three 3-hr sessions) & the collaborative support of their more experienced colleagues.
